Suzanne Citron

Suzanne Citron (born July 15, 1922 in Ars-sur-Moselle , † January 22, 2018 in Paris ) was a French historian , author and professor at the University of Paris-Nord .

Life

Citron was born Suzanne Grumbach in 1922. Coming from a Jewish family, Citron later converted to Christianity. She attended the Lycée Molière in Paris. While the father was in German captivity during World War II, the family fled to Lyon on August 15, 1942 . There she began to study history with Henri Marrou at the university and was involved in the Resistance . After being arrested by the Gestapo , Citron spent the last weeks of the war in the Drancy assembly camp .

In 1947 she received her Agrégation and taught twenty years as a teacher of history at French high schools and later as Maître de conférences at the University of Paris-Nord. In 1974 she did her PhD at the University of Paris-Nanterre with René Rémond .

Citron published mainly on recent French history. A wider audience, she was with her in 1987 published book L'histoire de France en question: Le mythe national (dt .: The national myth The French story questioned. ), In which it undertook a reassessment of French history, while the criticized French colonialism. In 2003 she published her memoir.

Suzanne Citron was married to the Romanist, musicologist and literary scholar Pierre Citron .
