Suzanne Lilar (born 21 May 1901 as Suzanne Verbist in Ghent , died 12. December 1992 in Brussels ) was a Belgian writer who wrote in French.

Life

Suzanne Verbist came from a Flemish family who belonged to the francophone bourgeoisie in Ghent. Her father Eugène Verbist was the station master in Rabot , her mother Hélène Van Ghelder worked as a teacher. She grew up bilingual in Ghent , and during the German occupation in World War I she also attended a Flemish school at times.

From 1919 Verbist studied philosophy and law at the University of Ghent , where she was the first woman to take a legal exam in 1925 and was the first woman to be admitted to the bar in Antwerp . After a first marriage in 1923 with Daniel Delmotte, she married in 1929 the lawyer Albert Lilar , who made a career in the Liberal Party and became a minister. Her daughters were the writer Françoise Mallet-Joris (1930-2016), a pseudonym, and the art historian Marie Fredericq-Lilar (born 1934). She was raised to baroness with her husband in 1976 . After the death of Albert Lilar in 1976, she moved from Antwerp to Brussels.

Lilar began her literary career from 1926 to 1931 as a journalist for the newspaper Le Matin and supervised the court reports. In 1931 she wrote a report on the Spanish Republic for the newspaper L'Indépendance belge . Between 1930 and 1940 she was responsible for the two daughters during the marriage. Her first play did not appear until 1945. She wrote dramas, novels, short stories and essays. Lilar received the Prix ​​Sainte-Beuve for Journal de l' analogiste in 1954 and the Prix ​​Saint-Simon in 1977 . The novel La confession anonyme was filmed in 1983 by the Belgian director André Delvaux under the title Benvenuta .
