history

The founder, head of the company ( Chairman and Managing Director ) is the former textile manufacturer Tulsi Tanti . In 1995 he started to build up his own energy supply with the help of wind turbines for his family business with 20 employees and founded Suzlon. This supply concept was also offered to other companies. In 2001 Tanti sold his textile company. In 2006 he was ranked eighth of the richest Indians on the Forbes list. In 2008, 40–50 Indian banks were already involved in financing Suzlon projects. According to Forbes, he was the richest Indian in 2008 and ranked 33rd richest men in the world. However, this rank was lost as a result of the financial crisis .

Development of the group

The development department of Suzlon was built around leading employees of the wind turbine manufacturer Südwind. It has been based in Rostock since 2003, and locations in Berlin, Hamburg, Bochum , Aarhus (Denmark) and Hengelo (Netherlands) have been added.

On February 9, 2007, Suzlon Energy submitted a purchase offer for the German wind turbine manufacturer REpower Systems for a total of 1.02 billion euros, which was 20% more than an offer made recently by the French nuclear company Areva . Suzlon had set up a special purpose vehicle (Suzlon Windenergie GmbH) for the takeover via an indirect subsidiary (SE Drive Technik GmbH), in which they held 75% and the Portuguese Martifer Group 25%. Martifer already held 25.4% of the REpower shares. In May 2007, Suzlon took over REpower Systems for a majority of 1.3 billion euros; the last shareholders were settled in October 2011 as part of a squeeze-out . The REpower brand was used by Suzlon until 2013. In 2014 the branch was renamed Senvion .

In 2015, due to financial difficulties, Suzlon was forced to sell Senvion to the US fund Centerbridge.
