Svend Andersen, Societas Ethica in Oxford (2006)

Andersen's study book "Introduction to Ethics" clarifies the relationships between theological and philosophical ethics, whereby Andersen locates himself strongly in the Lutheran tradition and among the authors of the 20th century only the designs by Paul Althaus , Karl Barth , Emil Brunner and Knud E. Løgstrup represents more precisely. Among the more recent philosophical drafts, John Rawls and Alasdair MacIntyre are particularly honored.

In “Macht aus Liebe” (2010) Andersen traces Luther's political ethics in detail and presents their transformations in modern times. In Luther's authoritative pamphlet, Andersen elaborates the concept of “political neighborly love”: “A Christian supports the institution of political rule - secular authority - because it aims at the benefit of people, because a Christian acts precisely for the benefit of his fellow men.” In the third In part, this Lutheran ethic is related to the drafts of John Rawls (political liberalism) and Jürgen Habermas (Kantian republicanism), which Andersen presents to the reader as “political-philosophical allies for the endeavor to reconstruct Lutheran political ethics”. Habermas 'legal philosophy and political philosophy serve him to sharpen the profile of Rawls' theory. At Rawls, he focuses on three topics:

  1. Theoretical representation of liberal democracy ;
  2. Philosophical justification of democratic principles;
  3. Determination of religion.

A Lutheran Christian could agree with the two principles of justice that Rawls unfolds in A Theory of Justice , since they (from the internal perspective of his faith) "express the political shape of charity."
