Sveti Jošt nad Kranjem

The Sveti Jošt nad Kranjem is a pilgrim church in the Baroque style and stands on a 847  m high mountain east of the town of Kranj in Gorenjska in Slovenia .

history

The church was mentioned for the first time in 973 in documents from the estate of Emperor Otto II . The oldest preserved part of the church is the Gothic sanctuary, where frescoes by Jernej von Loka from 1530 are kept. It was very popular with pilgrims between 1730 and 1770 . The church was redesigned in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The church bell from 1834 with verses by France Prešeren weighs 1,344 kg. It was cast by Anton Samassa from the bronze of cannons that had been lying on the seabed in Greek waters since the Battle of Navarino . On July 7, 1944, during World War II , the surrounding buildings were severely damaged. Three years later, lightning struck the church bell, and the roof of the church and the two bell towers burned down. The church celebrated its 250th anniversary.
