Sveti Juraj (also Jurjevo , German translated St. Georg ) is a fishing village on the Croatian coast , ten kilometers south of Senj , with 961 inhabitants. It is located on the Croatian coastal road Jadranska magistrala at the foot of the Velebit Mountains. The mountain pass Oltar (1002 m) leads from Sveti Juraj over the Velebit massif.

The place lives mainly from tourism and fishing. There is also a wood factory.

In the bay of Sveti Juraj there is a protected anchorage for smaller ships. In front of the harbor is a rock island.

Sveti Juraj is known for its drinking water sources in the area.

The small harbor is home to fishing boats that mainly go to sea for scampi fishing. Sveti Juraj developed at the point where it is easiest to cross the Velebit massif over the mountain pass Oltari (1002 m) and where there is abundant water. The large beach ends on the south side with a shallow bay, which is protected from south and partly from west winds, but which has nothing to oppose the Bora storm winds falling over the Oltar mountain pass . There are several bays with beaches (pebbles) on the coast around Sveti Juraj. In the small Kolo Bay south of Sveti Juraj there is a protected anchorage for smaller ships.

history

Above the place are the remains of the prehistoric settlement Lopsice , during the Roman period the municipality Lopsica stood here. The settlement and the offshore island of Lisac were connected with an artificial bridge made of stone and sand. Over time, parts of the city sank into the sea. Today the remains of the old settlement can be found in the sea.

The Benedictine monastery "Sveti Juraj" was founded in the 12th century. In the 14th century the Gothic church “Saints Filip and Jacob” was built near the Benedictine monastery. The Gothic architecture is one of the most beautiful in the Velebit area. The Turkish attacks against the city began at the beginning of the 15th century. In the 16th century Lopsice was abandoned because of the constant Turkish attacks and the residents moved out. In the middle of the 18th century the place was rebuilt and got a trading port. In 1856 the church of Sv. Juraj built. The monastery was abandoned in the middle of the 19th century.
