history

The origin of the Swaffham Bulbeck Lodes goes back to Roman times . After the departure of the Romans, the lode probably played only a minor role as a route of transport, although a small settlement called Newnham formed at its end, which is now known as the Commercial End. It was not until the 18th century that the lode regained importance as a trade route for the delivery of wine and salt and the removal of grain. In the course of the 18th century, the Lode had to be cleared of mud and its banks reinforced. With the increasing use of the Lode, the importance of Commercial End also grew. After 1805 Thomas Bowyer created a private dock for his department stores built in Commercial End, which he connected to the Lode via a short canal . At the end of the Lode there was also another landing stage. Even after the Cambridge Hills were connected to the railway network, the Lode was still used as a transport route for some time.

The Swaffham Bulbeck Lode is no longer accessible by boat.
