Swetlana Wiktorowna Babanina ( Russian Светлана Викторовна Бабанина ; born February 4, 1943 in Tambov , Soviet Union ) is a Russian swimmer who competed for the Soviet Union.

Athletic career

Swetlana Babanina won a bronze medal (200 m chest) at the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo on October 12, 1964 with 2: 48.6 minutes behind Galina Stepanova (USSR) and Claudia Kolb (USA) and on October 18, 1964, another bronze medal the Soviet team in the 4 × 100 m medley competition.

Four years later, Babanina took 6th place in the 100 m chest and 7th place in the 200 m chest at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City .

In 1962 and 1963 Babanina was the Soviet champion in 4 × 100 m medley and in 1964 in 100 m breaststroke. She also set two world records : 1964 with 1: 17.2 and 1965 with 1: 16.5 (100 m chest), which were also European records .
