Swimming pool (cocktail)
Swimming Pool is the name of a creamy-sweet, alcoholic cocktail based on white rum and vodka . By combining rum with coconut cream and pineapple juice , it belongs to the group of coladas and is closely related to the popular piña colada . In contrast to this, part of the white rum is replaced by vodka and a shot of blue curacao (blue orange liqueur ) is added, which gives the drink the turquoise-blue color of a swimming pool and thus its name. In the English-speaking world, the cocktail is also known as Blue Hawaiian (not to be confused with Blue Hawaii , which is sour-based and does not contain coconut cream).
history
The "swimming pool" - originally written in one word and actually not a cocktail in the classic sense, but a so-called fancy drink - was created in 1979 in Munich's Schumann's Bar and was first published in 1984 by its operator, the bartender and restaurateur Charles Schumann . The ingredients ( "4 cl white rum, 2 cl vodka, 1 cl Curaçao Blue, 2 cl coconut cream, 1 cl sweet cream, 4 cl pineapple juice, pineapple slice, cocktail cherry" ) were put on ice except for the curacao and the fruit in the shaker shaken and filled into a bulbous fancy glass filled to the brim with crushed ice , then the curacao was poured over it and garnished with a pineapple slice and cocktail cherry. In American Bar from 1991, Schumann reduced the proportion of rum in favor of pineapple juice and published the recipe for his swimming pool , which is still used today, consisting of 2 cl white rum, vodka, sweet cream and coconut cream, 6 cl pineapple juice and 1 cl blue curacao, which includes Stalk cherry and pineapple piece decorated and now served in a tumbler (beaker) in his bar .
In the non-alcoholic versions, the alcohol-free spirits white rum and vodka, which are not particularly strong in any case, are dispensed with and a blue curacao syrup is used instead of the orange liqueur .
