description

Vegetative characteristics

Syagrus romanzoffiana reaches a height of 10 to 15 meters or more and a diameter of 35 to 50 centimeters. The leaves are pinnate and carry 150 to 200 leaflets on each side of the 2.5 to 4.4 meter long leaf spindle ( rachis ) .

Generative characteristics

The branched inflorescence with 80 to 280 branches reaches a length of up to 1.5 meters. The egg-shaped, yellow to orange-colored fruits measure 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter and are 2 to 3 centimeters long.

The fruit has a gray, small core that looks like a coconut and is no larger than 3 centimeters. A fruit cluster with 100 seeds each weighs around 1 kilogram. The total weight of the fruits per plant can be around 140 kilograms. The plants can bloom and produce fruit at different times of the year, depending on the region. The seed germinates after 100 to 150 days, with the seeds having a germination rate of 50 to 79 percent.

Dissemination and use

Syagrus romanzoffiana thrives in the subtropics and tolerates temperatures from 0 ° C to 40 ° C. It is used as an ornamental plant in parks and gardens in subtropical and tropical areas almost worldwide . In Australia , Honduras and Mauritius , S. romanzoffiana is considered an invasive plant species . It is rarely offered in Central Europe and Germany, and it is rarely found in culture.

Various animals use the fruit as food. Because of its sweetish mucilage , the fruit is particularly popular with red-tailed parrots , Guyana squirrels and dogs, but also with children. The fruits are also commonly used as animal feed.

The palm heart is used for the production of food.
