Mr. Symarip (Roy Ellis)

Symarip (as in the meantime The Bees , The Pyramids , Seven Letters , EK Bunch , Sonny and the Stoneagers and Zubaba ) was a ska - and reggae - band from the UK , which was established in the late 1960s.

The band consisted of Caribbean / West Indian migrant children and is considered to be one of the "original" skinhead bands, as they were one of the first to consciously seek out the young skinhead movement as an audience through their lyrics. Her style of music was also called Skinhead Reggae , and her hits like "Skinhead Moonstomp", "Skinhead Girl" and "Skinhead Jamboree" underline her belonging to the scene. In 1971 the band went to Germany to perform reggae and the so-called Afro-Rock under the name Zubaba. In 1980 the album Skinhead Moonstomp was released, and Symarip cracked the UK charts for the first time. The band officially split in 1983. Trojan Records released a best-of album in 2004, with a re-release called "Back From the Moon" recorded by two former band members, Monty Neysmith and Roy Ellis. The song "Skinhead Moonstomp" is based on the Derrick Morgan song "Moon Hop". Roy Ellis, also known as Mr. Symarip, still performs as a solo artist today.
