Symmetrical dimethylarginine ( SDMA ) is a methylated derivative of the amino acid L - arginine . It arises from the breakdown of proteins ( proteolysis ) in the cell nucleus, gets into the bloodstream and is filtered and excreted by the kidneys. SDMA is an early marker of declining kidney performance in dogs and cats, as it correlates very closely with the glomerular filtration rate and is not dependent on muscle mass like creatinine . With a value> 14 µg / dl in the blood plasma, decreased filtration of the kidneys can be assumed, values between 15 and 19 µg / dl should be checked after two weeks. In cats with chronic kidney disease , the SDMA value rises 17 months earlier than the creatinine value, and in dogs with chronic kidney disease, 10 months earlier.
