The synagogue in Altenschönbach

The former synagogue in the Prichsenstadt district of Altenschönbach in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen is a former sacred building of the Israelite religious community . It is located on Lochmühlstrasse in the center of the village.

history

As early as 1717 there was a synagogue in the center of the village. A Jewish school was located next to the prayer room. In 1795 the Altenschönbach Jews began to compile a book of the dead , which was kept in the synagogue. A foundation in 1838 made it possible to build a new synagogue. Singer, a member of the community, donated 2,400 guilders that year, which was half of the amount to be raised.

The synagogue was built in 1843 and was also equipped with a school and a mikveh . On November 10, 1938, some SS men from Prichsenstadt marched in front of the synagogue. They broke the windows of the house and demolished the interior. The stolen Torah scrolls were burned in a farmer's garden. Between 1949 and 1950, there were two trials against those primarily responsible. In 1987 there was a cooling system inside.

description

The Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments has classified the former synagogue as an architectural monument . Today it presents itself as a two-story hipped roof building . The synagogue dates from the 19th century and was equipped with tapered door and window openings.
