Synagogue (Bitburg)
The synagogue in Bitburg , the district town of the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1877. The synagogue , standing a little higher on a fenced-in property, was located on Rautenbergstrasse.
History and description
After the number of Jewish families in Bitburg increased, the Jewish community could think of building a synagogue. The foundation stone was laid on April 13, 1877. The synagogue in neo-Romanesque style with arched windows was divided by pilaster strips . On the east side, a round arch was fries with an apse-like Toranische . District architect Peter Josef Julius Wolff had drawn up the plan in a disinterested way and waived any fee.
The synagogue was devastated during the November pogrom in 1938 . The building remained and was destroyed in a bombing raid on Christmas 1944. The ruin was demolished in 1952.
Today there is a gas station with a plaque on the synagogue property . A model of the synagogue is in the Bitburg-Prüm District Museum .
