Synagogue in Buttenhausen

The synagogue in Buttenhausen , a district of the Münsingen community in the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1796 and expanded in 1871/72. The synagogue stood on the Mühlsteige, above the area in the Jewish part of Buttenhausen, which was then settled.

history

The prayer room in a private house soon proved to be too small for the rapidly growing Jewish community of Buttenhausen . With the support of Baron von Liebenstein , the landlord , the construction of the synagogue could begin in the spring of 1796. It towered over the other buildings and was level with the Christian church on the other side of the valley.

In 1871/72 the synagogue was renovated and expanded. At that time there were 348 Jews in Buttenhausen out of a total of 751 inhabitants in the community.

The synagogue was destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 . The fire brigade and the mayor put out a first fire in the stairwell. During the second firing, the fire brigade was forbidden to extinguish the fire. The SA men from Münsingen and Buttenhausen smashed the benches in the synagogue and piled the books in a pile. Then they doused everything with gasoline and set the synagogue on fire. The Torah scrolls could be saved beforehand. After the synagogue was destroyed, services were held in the rabbinate building until the Jewish residents were deported .

Commemoration

On September 4, 1966, a small complex was opened to the public on the site of the destroyed synagogue. The focus is on the memorial stone created by Boris Grünwald and a memorial plaque.
