The synagogue in Ichenhausen , a town in the Swabian district of Günzburg , is located at 22 Vorderen Ostergasse.

history

The Jewish community of Ichenhausen built its first synagogue in 1687. It was replaced by a new building in 1781, which was probably designed by the church builder Joseph Dossenberger (1721–1785). In 1813 she became a member of the Ichenhausen district rabbinate due to the Bavarian edict of Jews .

In 1896 the synagogue was renovated and the interior was redesigned. A large oval ceiling was created with stucco and room-covering painting . In 1929 a modern steam heating system was installed.

The interior of the synagogue was destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 . During the Second World War it served as a warehouse for the Wehrmacht .

architecture

The synagogue in Ichenhausen is a rectangular building with its longitudinal axis facing the street. High arched windows illuminate the interior on three sides. The four arched windows on the eaves sides are set off against the plaster masonry by flat frames. In 1781 a three-storey extension was also built in which a school, a rabbi apartment and in the basement a ritual bath ( mikveh ) were housed. The following inscription is written above the entrance to the prayer room: This is the gate of the Eternal, where the righteous enter ( Psalm 118 : 20).

Current condition

In 1953 the synagogue came into the possession of the city of Ichenhausen and, after renovations from November 1958 to the summer of 1985, it was used as a fire station .

Since 1980 an action group Synagoge Ichenhausen e. V. about the renovation of the synagogue. Finally, from 1984 to 1987 the synagogue building was completely restored to its original state of construction. On December 4, 1987, the building was the house of the meeting officially opened. There is a permanent exhibition on the land of Judaism on the upper floors .
