The synagogue in Lechenich , a district of Erftstadt in the Rhein-Erft district , was built in 1886 and was located at Judenstraße 8 . It was destroyed during the November pogrom in 1938 .

history

Before the synagogue was built, the Lechenich Jewish community owned a prayer room at Judengasse 43 , today's Judenstrasse 7 , which became too narrow for the larger Jewish community .

The newly built synagogue was inaugurated on September 10, 1886 by Rabbi Abraham Frank (1839–1917) from Cologne . The synagogue, a brick building with four towers, offered space for 60 men and 36 women. The construction was carried out by the Lechenich master mason Eberhard Popp. In order to achieve the desired orientation to the east, the building had to be erected with the long side parallel to the street. The entrance facade in the west had towers and domes at both corners and also to the right and left of the portal . There was a rose window above the portal . The entrance for the women was in a small annex on the south side, from where the women's gallery could be reached directly . The style elements show how B. also the arched windows , the prevailing predilection for oriental architecture at the time .

time of the nationalsocialism

The synagogue was set on fire on November 10, 1938 under the direction of the local farmer leader Peter Drove and the mayor Paul Geile . The walls were torn down by Russian prisoners of war during World War II . After 1945 a residential house was built over the property.
