Synagogue (Mende)

Former synagogue in Mende

The synagogue in Mende , a French commune in the Lozère department of the Occitanie region , was built in the Middle Ages . The former synagogue at 17 rue Notre-Dame has been a protected architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1998 .

There is evidence of a Jewish community in Mende from 1229 to the expulsion of the Jews in France in 1306. From 1310 the synagogue building was used by a religious community until the revolution . The building was then auctioned off as a national property and converted into a residential building.

In the 1970s the building was renovated.
