Today's appearance of the former synagogue

The synagogue in Miltenberg , the county town of the same district in the administrative district of Lower Franconia ( Bavaria ), was built in 1903/04. The profaned synagogue at Mainstrasse 57 is a protected monument .

history

The plans for a new synagogue, now the third in the history of the Miltenberg Jewish community , go back to the 1880s. In 1889 a synagogue and school building association was founded, Wilhelm Klingenstein became one of the donors. City architect Ludwig Frosch was commissioned to plan the construction of a new synagogue in 1902. The building project was approved in March 1903. Construction work began a month later, but had to be stopped due to a different design. Ludwig Hofmann (1862–1933) from Herborn, who had built the Protestant church, the schoolhouse and the Gustav Jacob villa as early as 1896/97, was appointed co-architect. Its rescheduling was approved and from June 17, 1903 construction could continue. The foundation stone was laid the day before. The construction manager was - as before - city architect Ludwig Frosch. Construction work was completed on August 26, 1904, and the inauguration ceremony took place from August 26 to 28, 1904.

The New Synagogue in 1904

The appearance of the synagogue in 1910 was described as follows: “ The new building ... is divided into a high domed building, which offers a spacious temple with a gallery for women, and next door into a two-story school building with a classroom with an adjoining room on the first floor There is a nice official apartment with three rooms plus a kitchen and a chamber for the teacher. In the lower room with a wooden storage room and laundry room, in which the former fishing fountain is also located, provisions have also been made to be able to set up a ritual bath later if necessary ”.

description

The two-storey sandstone cuboid building with a mansard hipped roof and elevated central risalit with a flat pyramid roof was carried out in the style of historicism . The domed sacred space was destroyed except for the basement plinth during the November pogroms in 1938 . In the following years the building was rebuilt for office purposes and used as a rural police, employment office etc. a. utilized. After it was sold to a private individual in 1967, the former synagogue was converted for residential use.
