The synagogue in Montabaur , a town in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1889 and destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 . The synagogue was at Wallstrasse 5.

history

The ceremonial inauguration of the synagogue by Rabbi Michael Silberstein from Wiesbaden took place on 20/21. December 1889.

On the night of November 3rd to 4th, 1938, the synagogue was broken into, and the rituals were smashed or stolen. During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was demolished by SA men from Höhr-Grenzhausen . On the evening of November 10th, members of the SA started a fire, but the fire was put out again out of consideration for the surrounding buildings. The synagogue building was demolished in the 1940s.

The remains of the foundations of the former synagogue were found during the excavation work for a new building on the synagogue site in spring 2016.
