Synagogue (Remagen)
The synagogue in Remagen , a town in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Ahrweiler , was built in 1869. It was on the corner of Grabenstrasse and Schmiedegang.
history
The Jewish community in Remagen initially had a prayer room on the ground floor of a house on the corner of Bachstrasse and Kirchstrasse. After the number of Jewish community members increased in the middle of the 19th century, the community planned to build a synagogue. After a collection from the Jews in the Prussian Rhine Province and a promised grant from the city of Remagen of 50 thalers , construction could begin in 1865. The inauguration took place on 20./21. August 1869.
time of the nationalsocialism
During the pogrom on November 10, 1938 , the synagogue was devastated and set on fire by SS men from Bad Neuenahr and Ahrweiler . The Jewish community sold the ruins on May 9, 1939 to the post office in Koblenz. After 1945 the ruins were demolished and a parking lot was created. A memorial plaque on the opposite side of the street has been commemorating the synagogue since 1989.
