The synagogue in Witten , a town in the southeast of the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia , was built in 1884/85. The destroyed synagogue was located on the corner of Breite Strasse and Kurz Strasse. In 1979 the city of Witten renamed Kurz Straße as Synagogenstraße .

history

The synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Franz Xaver Rademacher . The dome in the historicism style had an organ and a women's gallery , but no separate entrances for men and women.

During the November pogrom on the night of November 9th to 10th, 1938, the synagogue was devastated and set on fire. The ruins were blown up in World War II and a fire pond was created on the site .

Commemoration

In 1994, the city in memory of the presented Jewish community Witten and its synagogue by Wolfgang Schmidt -designed memorial on. It consists of two steel plates arranged at right angles with Hebrew and German inscriptions.
