Synagogue (Rhineland-Palatinate)
synagogue

The synagogue in Böhl , a district of the municipality of Böhl-Iggelheim in the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1839/40. The synagogue was at Schulstrasse 43.

history

The community member Josef Gerson provided a building plot free of charge. The relatively small Jewish community built a building based on plans by the district building officer, Foltz, which was based on the synagogue in Ingenheim . On December 27, 1840, the synagogue was inaugurated by Rabbi Aron Merz from Frankenthal .

In 1906 the building partially burned down and was then rebuilt. After the First World War, church services were only held on the feast days , as the number of Jewish community members had fallen sharply.

The apartment in the synagogue building had been rented to a non-Jewish family with five children since 1937. On the morning of November 10, 1938 , the tenant was summoned to the town hall by the mayor and local group leader . She was told that she and her family would have to get out of their home within thirty minutes because the synagogue was about to be set on fire. In the next few hours, however, no apartment was found, which is why the mayor informed her at lunchtime that the synagogue should not be set on fire "because of endangering Aryan property", but only systematically destroyed. Community officials, members of the NSDAP and SA as well as local residents used axes to destroy the interior, including the Torah scrolls, as well as windows and doors. The roof tiles were also covered. The tenants' apartment was also vandalized. In June 1940 the synagogue building became the property of the municipality of Böhl-Iggelheim free of charge, the purchase price was offset against the demolition costs. The ruin was demolished that same year.

Commemoration

On November 28, 1971, a memorial stone was erected at the location of the synagogue with the inscription: "The synagogue of the Jewish community of Böhl-Iggelheim stood here until it was destroyed by the National Socialists on November 9, 1938."
