The synagogue in Schifferstadt , a town in the Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1892. The synagogue , which stood at Bahnhofstrasse 48, was inaugurated on September 9 and 10, 1892.

architecture

The synagogue in Schifferstadt was one of the last synagogue buildings with oriental style elements. The synagogue in Ingenheim , built by Friedrich von Gärtner in 1831/32, served as a model . A characteristic feature of Schifferstadt was the large horseshoe arch above the portal, which rested on two capitals . Inside, the synagogue had flat roofs, the blue-painted ceiling was adorned with stars. The Torah shrine was made of white lacquered wood.

history

Church services were presumably held until around 1933 . Because several families moved away during the Nazi era , it became more and more difficult to reach the minyan , the ten Jewish men required for worship.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was burned down on the morning of November 10th by SA men from Mutterstadt and Schifferstadt. After the fire, only the foundation walls remained. The Jewish community of Schifferstadt was forced to sell the synagogue property and the still standing teachers' house to the community of Schifferstadt in May 1939.

After 1945, as part of the restitution process, the synagogue property went to the Jewish Community of the Rhine Palatinate , which sold it to private individuals in Schifferstadt in 1951. A few years later the property was rebuilt.

Commemoration

On November 25, 1984 a memorial stone was erected on the neighboring property. The inscription reads: “Gen. 4.9 Dan. 3.17. In memory of the Schifferstadt synagogue. In 1892 our Jewish fellow citizens had built their house of prayer at Bahnhofstrasse 48. In 1938 fanatical racial madness led to their destruction by fire. At this point we also remember our Jewish families Bender, Freundlich, König, Landmann, Levy, Löb, Mängen, Mayer Bernh., Mayer Isaak, Mayer Ludwig, Reiss, Rubel, Oppenheimer, Weiler. The persecution of the Jews during the Nazi era brought them unspeakable suffering. "
