The synagogue in Batelov (German Battelau ), a Moravian minor town in Okres Jihlava in the Vysočina region ( Czech Republic ), was built around 1795. The derelict synagogue is a protected cultural monument .

history

Jews are mentioned in Battelau as early as the 15th century. In the middle of the 19th century the Jewish community in Battelau had almost 200 members. The last Jewish residents were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto by the German occupiers in May 1942 .

The previous building of today's synagogue was destroyed in a major fire. The Jewish community was already in the process of disintegration in the early 1930s. After 1945 the synagogue temporarily served as a place of worship for the Hussite community. The building has been used for other purposes since the 1980s.
