history
A Jewish community in Gaukönigshofen was founded around 1750. The existence of a synagogue in the village is documented from 1768. In 1842 a new synagogue was built. The saddle roof construction consists of quarry stone with house stone integrations .
Around 1910 a community hall with a school and a teacher's apartment was added to the synagogue.
time of the nationalsocialism
During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA and SS members from Ochsenfurt and Giebelstadt broke into the synagogue and smashed the interior on the night of November 10th . After that, the rubble in front of the building was burned. The synagogue building was spared from a fire.
In 1939 the Jewish community facilities became the property of the Gaukönigshofen community. The synagogue building was now used as a residential and warehouse.
Todays use
Since 1988, the restored synagogue building in Gaukönigshofen has housed the memorial for the Jewish victims in the Würzburg district. The synagogue room, which has been restored almost true to the original, serves as a memorial. In the former classroom and the teacher's apartment there is a permanent exhibition that informs visitors about Jewish culture and the end of the Jewish communities in the Würzburg area.
During the renovation work on the synagogue building, remains of the old mikveh of the previous building (before 1819) were discovered in the basement.
Commemoration
All former Jewish residents of Gaukönigshofen who were murdered by the National Socialists are named on a memorial plaque in three languages on the gable end of the synagogue building.
