The current building of the former synagogue

The synagogue in Humpolec was completed in 1762. Since 1961 the building has served as the parish hall of the Czechoslovak Hussite Church .

history

The Jewish community in Humpolec , which had existed with a long interruption since the 14th century, first held services in private apartments; in 1754 she finally applied for a synagogue to be built. In 1760 its construction was approved by Jakub Benedikt Freiherr von Neffzern, the owner of the Herálec and Humpolec lands at the time .

In 1886 a major fire in Humpolec also severely damaged the synagogue, which then had to be rebuilt. At the end of the 19th century the synagogue was reconstructed and expanded. Services took place until the outbreak of World War II . The three valuable gates with numerous silver ritual objects were transferred to Prague during the war and are now in the Jewish Museum there . After the war, the synagogue was robbed and heavily devastated.

In 1952 the Czechoslovak Hussite Church bought the building, converted it and has been using it for its own purposes as a parish hall since 1961; In 1987 there was another extensive restoration of the exterior and interior, including the renewal of fragments of the original wall painting including Hebrew inscriptions.

architecture

The original building from 1760/62 was built in the Baroque style, the reconstructions from 1860 were based on the neo-Gothic style. The interior was kept simple. Additions included the rabbi's apartment, the ritual bath and a women's gallery . In 1870 rooms for the Šir Zion choral society were added and in 1892 an apse was added. A school was also built on the site.

On September 8, 2000 the building was declared a cultural monument.
