Synagogue (Hungen)
The synagogue in Hungen , a town in the Gießen district in Central Hesse , was built in 1832. The former synagogue at Bitzenstraße 38 is a protected cultural monument .
history
The plastered, two-story half - timbered building with a curved hipped roof had a Star of David on top . The window and door openings were rounded. In 1892 young people damaged the synagogue. In 1899 the building was extensively renovated.
The school with a teacher's apartment and a mikvah were located in the adjoining building .
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was destroyed by SA men. A little later, the community of Hungen acquired the synagogue building and the schoolhouse.
After 1945 the building was sold to private individuals and then converted into a residential building.
Commemoration
In 1990 a memorial plaque was put up with the following inscription: "Former synagogue inaugurated in 1832 under the Rabbinate of Upper Hesse - desecrated on November 10, 1938 under National Socialist rule and destroyed inside."
