Synagogue (Königstein im Taunus)
The synagogue in Königstein im Taunus , a health resort in the Hochtaunus district in Hesse , was built in 1905/06. The synagogue on Seilerbahnweg 9/11 was inaugurated on September 13, 1906.
history
The building, which was built by the architect Sigmund Münchhausen from Cologne , was possible thanks to a donation from Baroness Mathilde von Rothschild amounting to 50,000 marks . The synagogue in Osnabrück was also designed by Sigmund Münchhausen. The two-tower brick building with a high, bright interior had seats for 72 men and 34 women. The execution of the construction was in the hands of the Königstein architect Jakob Ohlenschläger . A mikvah was set up in the basement of the synagogue .
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was smashed and the building was then burned down. The fire ruin was blown up in 1939. The surrounding walls of the lower floors have been preserved. After 1945, a residential building was built on the property using the preserved surrounding walls.
Commemoration
In 1978 a memorial plaque was placed opposite the synagogue site with the inscription: "A synagogue stood here from 1906, destroyed on November 9, 1938. In memory of the Jewish citizens who were persecuted at the time, donated by Christians of both denominations and citizens of Königstein 1978".
Since the location of the memorial plaque proved to be unfavorable for memorial hours, a bronze model of the synagogue was set up in 1996 in the spa park with a view of the synagogue property. Every year in November there is a memorial hour to commemorate the history and fate of the Jewish residents of Königstein.
