Synagogue (Krnov)
The synagogue in Krnov (German Jägerndorf ), a Czech town in Okres Bruntál in the Moravian-Silesian region , was built in 1871. The synagogue on the former temple ring is a protected cultural monument .
history
The synagogue in neo-Romanesque style was built according to plans by the architect Ernst Latzel . The building in the arched style with two striking towers is a representative building that can be seen from afar.
At the beginning of November 1938, following a unanimous city council resolution initiated by the building contractor Franz Irblich (1905–1960), the synagogue was hastily used for the market hall . This prevented the government in Berlin from sending a telephone instruction to Mayor Dr. Oskar König called for the building to be destroyed in the pogrom of November 9, 1938 . The furnishings were dismantled and hidden, but not destroyed, and cult objects such as the Torah scrolls were saved.
After 1945 the synagogue was first used as a warehouse, in 1960 the district was in the building the archive Bruntál ( Freudenthal ) housed. In 1994 the synagogue was assigned to the Jewish community in Olomouc , but initially continued to be used as a district archive. In the great flood of July 1997 , the building was flooded 1.20 meters high and further damaged, but the substance remained intact. In 1999 it was transferred to the Jewish community in Olomouc. In the following years, the synagogue was extensively renovated with financial support from the EU, with the valuable interior furnishings with coffered ceiling in the Moorish-Sephardic style being faithfully restored.
