Synagogue in Lunéville

The Lunéville Synagogue is located in the French city of Lunéville in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the historic Lorraine region . The address of the synagogue is 7 rue Castara; it has been protected as an architectural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1980 .

history

The synagogue in Lunéville was built in 1786. It was the second synagogue to be built after the Jews were expelled from the Kingdom of France in 1394. Only the synagogue in Phalsbourg was built earlier, in 1772.

The synagogue was built according to the plans of the architect Augustin Charles Piroux (1749–1805) in the Louis-seize style. It has no Jewish symbol (e.g. Star of David ). Today it looks as if the building was clearly visible, set back from the street, and built. At the time of construction, however, it was covered by a house that was later demolished in order to conceal the fact that such a construction was tolerated. The French inscription Au Dieu d'Israël, par permission du roy de France, l'an 1786 (The God of Israel, with the permission of the King of France, in 1786) was originally placed on the facade . This inscription was replaced by a Hebrew text from the 1st Book of Kings (8.28 ELB ).
