Synagogue (Stavenhagen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stavenhagen synagogue was the religious center of the Jewish community in Stavenhagen . The former synagogue , which was renovated in 2013, is now a cultural center in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

history

In 1820 the synagogue was built as a half-timbered building. From 1935, no more services were celebrated. A fire was set in the synagogue on the night of the pogrom in November 1938. But it was quickly deleted by a neighbor. In 1942 the history of the Jewish community ended. At that time the last nine Jews were deported and murdered in concentration camps .

A carpenter's workshop was then set up in the synagogue . From 1986 the building finally stood empty and deteriorated more and more. The carpenter's granddaughter, who lives in West Germany and inherited the building in 1990, was one of the founding members of the "Alte Synagoge" association in 2011. She finally left the former church to the association via a long lease. After being in ruins for decades, it was extensively renovated from 2013 to 2017 under the supervision of the Ruiken + Vetter architectural office.
