history

A small wooden synagogue in Floß already existed in 1721. However, it burned down completely in 1813, which necessitated the construction of a new synagogue for the local Jewish community . Construction began in 1815 and was completed in 1817. The neighboring towns of Neustadt an der Waldnaab , Weiden in the Upper Palatinate and temporarily also the towns of Waldsassen and Tirschenreuth belonged to the rabbinical district at that time .

During the November pogroms in 1938 , the Floß synagogue was not spared either. Within a short time, the entire interior was completely destroyed. The windows were smashed, the Torah shrine torn out and the seating smashed. Valuable art objects were also stolen.

In the post-war period in the 1950s there was a shoemaker's shop in the dilapidated building. During this time the windows were reinstalled and other structural changes were made, such as the filling of the floor. On April 28, 1954, the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation established the status of the former synagogue as an art monument. After a change of ownership, the new owner planned to set up a button factory, which never happened.

In 1963, after efforts by Markt Floß, the synagogue was bought by the Israelite religious community . In the 1970s, the decision was made to restore the building so that the synagogue was restored to its original state on November 8, 1980.

On October 16, 2005, the last renovation from 2000 to 2005 was completed.

description
