A synagogue had already been built in Hamm in 1832. After this had become too small and the authorities had approved the construction of a new synagogue, a new synagogue was built in 1894 in the street Kirchberg 1 (today's Synagogenplatz). The plans were drawn up by the Cologne architect Franz-Josef Seché. It was a free-standing two-story, square brick building that had both Moorish - Byzantine and Neo-Romanesque elements. The square central building had three extensions. On the north side there was a single-storey extension that included the entrance hall. The two-storey extension on the west side housed the school and the women's gallery. On the east side there was another extension with a domed roof . Narrow towers were attached to the corners of the square central building and to the corners of the northern extension. The main building had a hooded roof on which there was an onion hood covered with copper plates . There was a Star of David on the top . The synagogue had horseshoe windows and round windows. As early as August 1938, the synagogue was the target of attacks by members of the NSDAP . They stormed the synagogue and smashed the furniture. During the November pogroms in 1938, the interior was completely destroyed and the synagogue was set on fire. The building was completely destroyed except for the outer walls. In 1945 the remains of the synagogue were demolished. There was no new development on the property. In 1978, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the November pogroms, a sculpture by the artist Erwin Wortelkamp was placed on Synagogenplatz. In 2007 the square was redesigned. During this work, the remains of a mikvah that belonged to the first wooden synagogue were found. The floor plan of the main building of the synagogue is shown in light paving on Synagogenplatz.
