Stadtlengsfeld synagogue

The Stadtlengsfeld synagogue was located in Stadtlengsfeld in what is now the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

Jewish community

Lengsfeld had been in the possession of those von Boyneburg since 1494 , who took in protective Jews in Lengsfeld and the neighboring Gehaus at the end of the 16th century . A Jewish cemetery already existed at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1731 there were 24 Jewish families in Stadtlengsfeld, in 1800 there were 800 Jews, after that the number declined. In 1824 Stadtlengsfeld became the seat of the land rabbinate for the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach . In 1846 the seat of the state rabbinate was relocated to Eisenach , from 1876 to 1912 it was again in Stadtlengsfeld and then again in Eisenach. In 1826 542 Jews lived in 145 families in Stadtlengsfeld. In 1895 there were 97 and in 1932 32 Jewish residents. The last Jewish residents left the city at the end of 1938.

synagogue

The synagogue was located at Amtsstrasse 8 and was used until the end of 1938. The building, built in the neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century, had five large stained glass windows on each of its long sides and a small tower on the roof. An extension with community rooms was attached to the building. The house is still preserved today as a residential and commercial building.

Jewish school

The Jewish school had existed in the immediate vicinity of the synagogue since 1799. In 1850, at the request of both communities, the local Christian and Jewish schools were closed and converted into a unified citizens' school. The school building at Ratsgasse 15 became the property of the city in 1860 and is still preserved today as a residential building.

Jewish Cemetery

The town's Jewish cemetery has also been preserved on the “Roter Graben” street. With over 600 preserved tombstones, it is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Thuringia.
