Synaptopodine is a cytoplasmic actin-associated protein with a molecular mass of approximately 73 kDa . Synaptopodine is found in both the kidney podocytes and the cerebrum .

Occurrence

Synaptopodine is found in the podocytes of the kidney as well as in the brain. In the cerebrum , synaptopodine is expressed in subpopulations of neurons containing spinous processes in the neocortex , hippocampus , striatum and olfactory bulb .

function

The function of synaptopodine was investigated, especially in the brain. There they are essential for the development of the spine apparatus as well as a part of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum on the initial piece of the axon segment . Synaptopodine seems to connect smooth endoplasmic reticulum with the actin cytoskeleton . This is important in processes of synaptic plasticity, especially in the long-term potentiation in some neurons. In the case of podocytes , only the importance of synaptopodine in the formation of stress fibers has been proven.
