The synod in Fritzlar of 1118, chaired by the papal cardinal legate Kuno von Praeneste , took place on July 28th of this year in Fritzlar in northern Hesse .

The main theme of this meeting of German bishops was the papal ban on Emperor Henry V , who was involved in the investiture dispute with Rome. The now deceased Pope Paschal II had banned Heinrich, and the synod announced and confirmed the renewed ban of the new Pope Gelasius II against the emperor. At the same time, the papal party of church princes relieved Prince-Bishop Otto von Bamberg of his office because, as Imperial Chancellor , he had remained loyal to his emperor in the dispute with Rome.

At the same synod, Norbert von Xanten , later canonized and later founder of the Premonstratensian order and later Archbishop of Magdeburg , successfully defended himself against the accusation of heresy that the official church made as a traveling preacher because of his charismatic reform and penance sermons by calling on John the Baptist would have.
