Synod of Aschheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Synod of Aschheim in 756 was the first church synod in the Baier tribal duchy . It took place under the patronage of Tassilo III. in Aschheim . In addition to general questions of pastoral care , such as the protection of women and the prohibition of incest , the main focus of this synod was the orientation of the Bavarian Christians towards Rome , which was demanded by the Franks , and which in a power dispute between the domination of episcopal structures initiated by Boniface before that, self-determined parishes and monasteries or those devoted to the tribal duke flowed. A point of contention was who can claim the right to collect the church ten.

This was followed in 769/70 by another synod in Dingolfing and 771 in Neuching as well as numerous monasteries founded by Tassilo, such as Innichen 769 and Mattsee and Kremsmünster 777.

The synodal acts of Aschheim disappeared for centuries and were only found again in the 18th century. Since it is assumed that both clergy and secular dignitaries took part in the synod, it is often referred to as the " First Bavarian State Parliament " in local history publications , although a similar meeting ( Concilium Baiuwaricum ) took place under Duke Odilo around 740 to 750 a Frankish document dated to the year 800 is known.

The dating of the Synod to 756 or 757 is uncertain. It is based on the assumption that it took place after the death of Boniface and before the Diet of Compiègne in 757, when Tassilo III. made the oath of allegiance or, from the Frankish point of view, vassal oath to Pippin the Younger and his sons.
