The system (proper spelling: SYSTEMS ) was an information and telecommunications - Trade Fair and found each year in Munich instead. The venue has been the New Munich Trade Fair Center in the trade fair city of Riem since 1998 . The organizer was Messe München GmbH . Organized for the first time in 1969, Systems was the oldest IT trade fair in the world, together with smau in Milan . Until 1995 the exhibition was held every two years. In its prime, the trade fair achieved a weight comparable to that of the CeBIT in Hanover, but never its size, as the old exhibition grounds in Munich initially stopped growing and soon after the move to the new exhibition grounds in Riem in 1998, the great IT crash Industry started.

The fair claimed to have recovered well from the years after the dot-com bubble and to have started restructuring early on. Since 2001, the Systems trade fair and the CeBIT trade and public fair have pursued different concepts. While CeBIT is seen as the world's leading trade fair in the information and telecommunications sector and as a "showcase for the industry", Systems described itself as the "industry's office". The target group was medium-sized companies , and the mostly national exhibitors came from the fields of solutions, software , training and research. The most successful part of the event was the so-called security hall ; the hall, which was permanently rented to a publisher, was not occupied by Messe München.

During the IT boom, the entire exhibition grounds were needed for the exhibitors. After a maximum of exhibitors in 2000, the occupancy had been reduced to a good four halls by 2005. By 2006, six halls were occupied again, in 2007 it went back to five halls while at the same time reducing the duration of the trade fair to four days.

The last system took place from October 21 to 24, 2008 in the New Munich Trade Fair Center. On October 22, 2008, it was announced at a press conference that Systems 2008 will be the last.
