Tebessa ( Arabic تبسة, DMG Tibissa , tamazight ⵜⴱⴻⵙⴰ; also Tébessa or Tbessa) is the capital of the Algerian province of the same name .

It is located about 40 km from the Algerian-Tunisian border at an altitude of 960 m and has over 200,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate). Tebessa is a university town and has an international airport ( Aéroport Cheikh Larbi Tebessi , IATA code: TEE).

Furthermore, Tebessa is the center of the Algerian film scene and organizes an international film festival every year.

In antiquity, one of the most important trade routes in Roman Africa led from Carthage to Tebessa or Theveste ( Greek  Θεουέστη ), as it was called at the time. Around 75 AD, the Roman Legio III Augusta was stationed there . Some ruins from Roman times have been preserved there to this day, including an arch of honor for Caracalla .

In the year 295 the early Christian conscientious objector Maximilian suffered a martyr's death in Theveste .
