Lehtmets' poetry is close to nature and focuses on country life, which the criticism of the time praised. In his later prose, the author often laments urbanization after the Second World War. His novel Der düstere Urwald (1978) caused a sensation , in which the years 1947 to 1949 were described in an Estonian forest village when the Second World War, from which the village was largely spared, was over, but the “post-war many Years smoldered in these forests. ”This meant the partisan war of the Forest Brothers, which, however, was not allowed to be named in the literary criticism of the time.
