The turquoise-blue kotinga ( Cotinga cayana ), sometimes also called collar kotinga , is a species of bird from the family of ornamental birds (Cotingidae). The species has a large range that includes the South American countries Bolivia , Peru , Ecuador , Colombia , Venezuela , French Guiana , Guyana , Suriname, and Brazil . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern . The species is considered to be monotypical .
features
The turquoise blue Kotinga reaches a body length of about 20 to 21.5 centimeters and has a short black beak. The male's enamel-turquoise plumage is traversed by inconsistent black speckles. The throat and the upper part of the chest are light reddish purple. The black wings have narrow blue edge tips on the coverts and hand wings. The tail is black. The sexual dimorphism of this species is extremely pronounced. The top, throat and breast of the female are dark gray-brown. It is a little darker on the wings with inconspicuous scale-shaped elements. The pale lower hand covers appear dull yellow-brown with dark flanks. Both sexes have a brown iris.
distribution and habitat
The bird is usually found in tropical zones at altitudes below 800 meters. It was rarely observed at heights of up to 1350 meters. It is seldom present in extremely humid terra firme forests and typical Várzea landscapes. He prefers dry river sandbanks at forest edges and open, dry, solid, evergreen lowland rainforest.
behavior
The turquoise blue Kotinga likes to sit on bare branches of the upper crown area and fluff up like a pigeon. Although the bird is more of a loner, it can occasionally be found in groups near trees with fruit. Most of the time, the turquoise blue Kotinga sits around in a rather unspectacular manner, motionless and hardly moves. Their preferred food is the fruits of the rainforest.
