As a security zone in Northern Syria ( Turkish Suriye'de Güvenli Bölge , Arabic الحزام الامني السوري الشمالي, DMG al-Ḥizām al-amnī as-sūrī asch-shamālī ) refers to Turkey an area in Syria west of the Euphrates that was conquered by the Turkish armed forces and their allies since August 2016 as part of the military offensive on Afrin and since then under theirs Control stands. The Turkish-controlled region is ethnically diverse: it is predominantly inhabited by Kurds , Turkmens and Arabs .

course

The Turkish military offensive on Afrin officially began on January 20, 2018. The territory of the Turkish-controlled region at the end of September 2018 was entirely in the northern areas of Aleppo Governorate , with the southern tip of the territory being 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Aleppo . The territory bordered the rebel-held Idlib Governorate to the south .

After Turkish armed forces had brought the area under their control, refugees from the southern provinces of Syria, as well as Arab fighters, some of whom had previously fled to Turkey, were settled in the region. They were offered the apartments and houses of the residents (mainly Yazidis or Kurds ) who had previously been displaced from there , who in turn were often not allowed to return. Therefore, Turkey is accused of actively pursuing a policy of ethnic cleansing in the region in order to prevent a coherent Kurdish state in northern Syria.

The Turkish military offensive in northern Syria followed on October 9, 2019 . Turkey invaded the northern provinces of Syria east of the Euphrates.

Positions

The Syrian government rejects the security zone in northern Syria agreed between Turkey and the USA at the beginning of August 2019 as a violation of their territorial integrity .

EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker asked Turkey in mid-October 2019 to end the offensive; France announced that it would request a meeting of the UN Security Council .

Observers regard the Turkish military action as a war of aggression that is contrary to international law .
