Turkish lobby in the United States

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Turkish lobby in the United States is a lobby that works to promote Turkish interests with the American government. The Turkish lobby is one of the ten largest foreign lobby groups in the USA.

Strength

In August 2007, professional lobbyists had more contact with members of Congress than lobbyists working for any other foreign government.

One of the most famous lobbyists for Turkey is the Armenian - Aramaic author Edward Tashji .

Effort against the recognition of the Armenian genocide

The Turkish lobby worked hard to prevent passages of US House Resolution 106 , the United States' resolution on the Armenian Genocide . In 2010, the resolution on the Armenian Genocide aroused "aggressive pressure" on the Turkish government and its lobby company, which is headed by Richard A. Gephardt. Public relations firm Fleishman-Hillard also signed a contract with Turkey worth more than $ 100,000 a month. A contingent of members of the Turkish Parliament regularly visits Washington, DC to lobby on behalf of the Turkish viewpoint.

The Turkish government has spent millions on Washington over the past decade, most of it just on the genocide problem. The country's current lobbyist, the Gephardt Group, raises over US $ 70,000 a month solely for the service of the Ankara government .

expenditure

According to ProPublica , Turkey is one of the "top players in foreign agent lobbying", as it only spent over 3,524,632 US dollars in 2007 and 2008 just to lobby the American government. In 2009, the Turkish lobby spent nearly $ 1.7 million influencing American officials, sharing some of the interests of Middle Eastern states. Lobbyists include former Congressman Dick Gephardt and former Congressman Bob Livingston .

According to the Sunlight Foundation, the Turkish government has consistently spent millions each year on well-connected Washington lobby firms.
