description

The Turkish oregano is a dwarf shrub whose stems can be up to 60 cm long, grow upright and are densely papillos and coarsely hairy. The opposite leaves are 5 to 22 mm long and 4 to 12 (rarely up to 17) mm wide. They are egg-shaped to circular-egg-shaped, rounded or heart-shaped at the base, pointed or pointed at the tip. The leaf margin is whole or sawed away. The leaf blade is papilose and shaggy hairy and dotted with glands. The leaf veins protrude slightly on the underside. The lower leaves are stalked, the rest sessile.

The inflorescence consists of spikelets 4 to 10 mm in length that are ovate, oblong or prismatic. They are very dense and at the end of the stems form a dense panicle with a diameter of 2 to 8 (rarely up to 10) cm. The bracts are 3 to 3.5 mm long and are slightly above the calyx . The lower bracts are ovate and pointed, the upper are circular-ovate, blunt and hairy with short hairs. The calyx is egg-shaped-spatulate, 2.75 to 3 mm long, single-lipped and has a deep slot on one side. It has entire margins or has three tiny teeth, almost hairless, dotted with glands and eyelashes. The crown is 4 to 5.5 mm long and white.

The fruits are oblong, egg-shaped nuts about 1 mm long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

Occurrence
