Tōdō Heisuke

Tōdō Heisuke ( Japanese 藤 堂 平 助 ; * 1844 ; † December 13, 1867 ) was the captain of the eighth corps of the Shinsengumi, a police force that was active in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period in the Bakumatsu period.

Shinsengumi

In 1863 he joined the Rōshigumi with his master Kondō Isami and the students Hijikata Toshizō , Okita Sōji , Nagakura Shinpachi , Harada Sanosuke and Inoue Genzaburō . This should protect the Shogun in Kyoto . When the Rōshigumi was ordered back to Edo , he and his friends split off from the group and founded the Shinsengumi under Kondō Isami. He was one of the first on site during the Ikedaya incident and was injured in the face.

Tōdō later separated from the group and followed his former teacher Itō Kashitarō and founded the Goryōejigumi with him . In the following year, tensions grew between these two groups. These discharged on December 13, 1867 during the so-called Aburakoji incident. According to the records of Nagakura Shinpachi Shinsengumi Tenmatsuki , Kondō had the wish to save Tōdō's life, but it failed. During the fighting, Tōdō was killed by a new member of the Shinsengumi Miura Tsunesaburō .
