The main battle tank T-84 is a Ukrainian advancement of the Soviet T-80 . The first prototype was made in 1994. In 1999 the vehicle was introduced to the Ukrainian armed forces . The T-84 is based on the T-80UD, the diesel engine version of the T-80.

Development history

The T-84 is the latest Ukrainian development of the T-64 and T-80 series , designed by ChKMB in Kharkiv (while the Russian T-90 is an advanced version of the T-72BM with the characteristics of a T-80). One of the main draft guidelines was to make the Ukrainian defense industry more independent from Russia.
A special feature of the T-84 is its excellent power-to-weight ratio. The T-84 was equipped with an air conditioning system for use in hot climates ; the operating temperature range is specified as −40 ° C to 55 ° C.

Models

  • T-84 (Object 478DU2) : Ukrainian modification of the T-80UD. New welded tower, Schtora -1 defense complex, 6TD-2 diesel engine with 1,200 hp (883 kW), auxiliary power unit.
  • T-84U (Object 478BE) : Ukrainian upgrade of the T-84. New armored side skirts, Kontakt-5 - reactive armor on the turret, auxiliary power unit, thermal imaging device, satellite navigation, laser rangefinder for the commander and other improvements.
  • T-84 Oplot (object 478DU9) : T-84U with welded tower with new laminate - composite armor and a new 125-mm KBA1 -Kanone. The oplot has separate crew and ammunition hatches with blow-out panels for the ammunition compartments and a new loading machine. In 2014 the Ukrainian army held 10 pieces.
  • T-84-120 Yatagan : Prototype of the oplot for testing by the Turkish army (prototype identification KERN2-120). Many technical solutions have been adopted from the T-72-120. He has a 120mm / L50 KBM2 smoothbore cannon that can fire 120mm NATO ammunition and a special 120mm version of the 9M119 anti-tank guided missile . The cannon corresponds to the GIAT F1 of the Leclerc . Due to the conversion to cartridged NATO ammunition, a new loading machine with a belt magazine was designed, which found space in the extended turret rear and can hold 22 shells. Another 18 shell cartridges are housed in the fighting compartment. Other features include a new air conditioning system, an automatic gearbox, steering with a handlebar instead of steering levers, a muzzle velocity measuring device and other fire control and communication systems. The tank took part in comparative tests in 2000, but Turkey decided against the procurement and instead bought 354 used Leopard 2 A4s from Germany.
  • BM Oplot (T-84 Oplot-M) : presented in 2008.Newly designedturret with Nosch-2 reactive armor, can be equipped with the distance-active Zaslon protection system .
  • BTMP-84 : Prototype armored personnel carrier based on the T-84 Oplot: extended hull, additional pair of rollers to gain space for the fighting compartment for five infantrymen in the rear.
