The TAI T129 Atak (Advanced Attack and Tactical Reconnaissance Helicopter) is an all-weather attack helicopter . It is a further development that emerged from a technology transfer of the Agusta A129 and was mainly developed by the Turkish companies TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries) and Aselsan , with the support of the Italian company AgustaWestland through the exchange of knowledge. In June 2014 the first three series machines were handed over to the Turkish armed forces .

history

The development program for a Turkish attack helicopter started in 1995. The primary goal was to build a state-of-the-art attack helicopter with national resources. At the end of March 2007, Agusta Westland won the ATAK tender of the Turkish army with the A129. He was able to prevail in the final against the South African Denel CSH-2 Rooivalk . 59 attack helicopters will be built by TAI in Turkey . The first flight with a prototype took place on September 28, 2009. Among other things, the deal provides for a complete technology transfer, the involvement of Turkish suppliers and the installation of new Turkish components. In this form, the helicopter to which TAI has the complete marketing rights will be called the T129 . The Turkish Navy plans to use the helicopter on the new TCG Anadolu aircraft carrier from 2019 . Four T-129s are to be stationed permanently on the TCG Anadolu.

technology

construction

The T129 is a two-seat helicopter. The gunner sits in front and behind him the pilot is in an elevated position. The armor of the cockpit is designed to withstand fire with 12.7 mm ammunition.

Engines

The two LHTEC-CTS800-4A - shaft engines , each with 1,045 kW bring the helicopter to a cruising speed of 269 km / h, m a service ceiling of the 6096th The rate of climb is almost 13.9 m per second. The range is 561 km, the transfer range 1000 km.

Radar and target acquisition

The ASELFLIR 300T thermal tracking and targeting system

The T129 is equipped with a TADS-FCR (Target Acquisition and Designation System-Fire Control Radar). The system can detect both land and sea targets up to a distance of 30 km. In addition, the radar system has SAR and ISAR capabilities. Aselsan developed the avionics and also a thermal tracking and targeting system ( FLIR ) under the name ASELFLIR 300T. A lighter and higher resolution ASELFLIR-235 will be used in later versions. Aselsan is also working on the development of a helmet visor under the name Avci, the prototype of which has already been developed and is undergoing the relevant qualification tests. In addition, the T129 can mark enemy targets according to the "buddy lasing" principle and thus fight them with laser-controlled weapons.

Armament

T-129 with maximum armament

To the main arm the T129 include the laser-controlled UMTAS -, Cirit - and Mizrak-O - antitank missiles (PTRS) of Roketsan and AIM-9 Sidewinder - air-to-air missiles and Hydra-70 - air-to-ground missiles . The T129 can optionally be equipped with AGM 114 Hellfire or Stinger AA missiles . The secondary armament consists of the pivoting three -barreled 20 mm Gatling cannon TM-197B in an Oto-Melara turret .

Self protection

The T129 has a radar warning and jamming system as well as a decoy system .
