Estação Ecológica do Taim

The Estação Ecológica do Taim nature reserve was established on July 21, 1986. Here, on 107.6463 km² in the area of the municipalities of Santa Vitória do Palmar and Rio Grande, the original ecosystems of the coastal plain between the Lagoa Mirim and the Atlantic are protected. Taim is on a list of candidates for the status of UNESCO - World Heritage .

The park is located between 52 ° 26 'and 53 ° 14' West and between 32 ° 31 'and 33 ° 35' South, about 370 km south of Porto Alegre, intersected by the BR-471 federal road.

The geologically young landscape with wetlands, small lagoons and dunes has little height differences. It is important as a stopover for migratory birds.

Extensive cattle breeding began in the area in the 19th century. The meat was used to make charqueadas for pelotas .

The climate is subtropical with an average annual temperature of 18 ° C. Winters are cold and humid, summers hot and dry. Strong winds blow.

The vegetation is lush with aquatic plants, restinga and swamp forests ( Várzeas ). Biodiversity is high, but is threatened by the water demand of the surrounding agriculture, hunting, fishing, fires and collisions with vehicles on the federal highway.
