Pasteur's day gecko ( Phelsuma pasteuri after Georges Pasteur ) is a reptile from the gecko family . Like all geckos of the genus Phelsuma , it is diurnal. The day gecko, which used to be a subspecies of the species Phelsuma v-nigra, is endemic to the island of Mayotte .
features
Pasteur's day gecko reaches a total length of approx. 11.5 cm and a head-torso length of 5.3 cm. The females are "egg eggs" and not like some species of the genus "egg glue", which can stick their eggs to plants. The body color is light green, the back is spotted orange and there are three orange U-shaped stripes on the face between the eyes. The eyes are outlined in yellow. Pasteur's day gecko can also be recognized by its broad, blue stripe on the neck. The tail is also partially pigmented in blue. Its ventral side is white, partly slightly yellowish.
distribution
Pasteur's day gecko can be found in trees and bushes on the Comoros island of Mayotte . There he usually hangs out on thin branches and twigs. The climate on Mayotte is not subject to any significant seasonal fluctuations and is therefore warm and humid all year round with an average temperature of around 25 ° C.
food
This day gecko, like all other species of the genus, feeds mainly on various insects and plant foods such as nectar and pollen .
Systematics
Pasteur's day gecko, as Phelsuma v-nigra pasteuri, was for a long time one of the subspecies of Phelsuma v-nigra . However, there is a cross-breeding barrier to the other three subspecies of Phelsuma v-nigra , so that this day gecko was finally granted the status as a separate species Phelsuma pasteuri . Together with P. v-nigra , P. robertmertensi and P. laticauda , Pasteur's day gecko is combined to form the Phelsuma laticauda group within the day geckos. This kin group is monophyletic .
